Portrait posts get about 25% more screen real estate than square posts in the feed. Use 1080×1350 for selfies, products, and any photo where vertical detail matters.
Frequently asked questions
- Why not just go taller than 1350?
- Instagram crops anything taller than a 4:5 ratio back to 1080×1350 in the feed. Going taller just throws away pixels.
- Will the portrait still show fully on the profile grid?
- No. The profile grid always uses square thumbnails, so the top and bottom of a 1080×1350 portrait get cropped on your grid preview.
- Is this the same as Pinterest portrait?
- Close but not identical. Pinterest prefers 1000×1500 (2:3); use the Pinterest preset for that platform.
