That is the resolution YouTube stores as maxresdefault, the version served to desktop, TV and the full-size player. Every smaller variant YouTube generates is derived from this master, so a sharp 1280×720 upload improves the thumbnail everywhere it appears rather than just on large screens. YouTube accepts JPG, PNG, GIF and WebP, and requires a minimum width of 640 pixels before a custom thumbnail is allowed at all. Under-sizing is the common failure: uploading a 640×360 file means YouTube never generates maxresdefault, so the desktop player falls back to a soft 480×360 image. What sizes does YouTube make from a thumbnail?
YouTube derives a ladder of thumbnail files from whatever you provide. maxresdefault is 1280×720, sddefault is 640×480, hqdefault is 480×360, mqdefault is 320×180 and the base default is 120×90. The critical consequence is that your artwork will regularly be displayed at 320 pixels wide in a sidebar or search result — about a quarter of the width you designed at. Text that looks comfortable at full size becomes unreadable at mqdefault. The working rule is that any word you actually need someone to read should occupy at least a tenth of the frame height, which for a 720-pixel-tall canvas means roughly 72 pixels — far larger than most people's first instinct. Note also that hqdefault is generated at 4:3 by letterboxing the 16:9 frame, so a thumbnail designed edge-to-edge in 16:9 gains black bars in some surfaces.
Overlays, file size and the mobile crop
YouTube composites the video duration badge over the bottom-right corner of every thumbnail in browse and search views, in a pill roughly 60 pixels wide at full scale. Anything placed there is permanently obscured. The progress bar for partially watched videos runs along the bottom edge, covering the lowest few pixels. On the mobile app, thumbnails in the subscriptions feed are sometimes cropped slightly on the sides depending on layout density. The 2 MB file-size ceiling is rarely a constraint for a JPEG at quality 85 — a typical 1280×720 export lands between 150 and 400 KB — but it is easy to exceed with a PNG containing a photographic background, which can run past 2 MB and be rejected outright. If your design is photographic, use JPG; reserve PNG for flat graphics with hard-edged text.
Designing for the 320-pixel case first
The most reliable way to build a thumbnail is to design at 1280×720 and then check it at 320×180 before publishing — shrink the preview in your editor and see whether the message still reads. Most thumbnails fail this test because they carry too many words. Three or four large words is the practical ceiling. High contrast between subject and background matters more than colour choice; a bright subject against a dark background survives downscaling better than two mid-tones next to each other. If the video is part of a series, keeping a fixed element in the same corner across every thumbnail helps the set read as a group in a channel grid. Faces at a large scale continue to outperform product shots and text-only cards in browse surfaces, so if a person appears in the video, crop tightly on them rather than showing the whole scene.
